Kieran Healy on Nostr: Utilitarians ( nprofile1q…rmd38 ) v Kantians ( nprofile1q…asdm7) on ...

Utilitarians ( nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpq5mlsk26z49ynfwv9m0ncuwzpkzr0nuyvjazjv7mg0l66xwjq2z2s9rmd38 (nprofile…md38) ) v Kantians ( nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpq85t5ln9ss2mdlpthts4e73q72yyl8uj3hlayhpsll36uue84pces3asdm7 (nprofile…sdm7)) on nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqcuf76pf3j3ddxx64z2l7luypf7xvfvhjyq4raxvxvgh2p0dj6jks0ct230 (nprofile…t230) this week. A thing about the Utilitarian side—which in fairness John sort of did note—is, can you actually do the Expected Value calculation? It’s easy to forget that it’s both two-sided and uncertain. Maybe the 401k part? But the direct and indirect consequences of endorsing corruption (or resisting it) are much harder to assess. If you can’t really do the math, the cost/benefit language gives mostly an illusion of precision.
