That's true, but there are also plenty of examples of internally-developed missed (so far) opportunities for innovation. A few examples:

- support for consent management. With Bridgy Fed, for example, once [@snarfed.org@snarfed.org](https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://snarfed.org/about ) decided to make it opt-in (conesnt FTW!) he had to figure out how to support it which basically meant rolling his own mechanisms. Why isn't there general infrastructure for that?

- Erin 💽✨ (npub1g6y…jrjv) "Letter of Introduction", described in https://blog.erinshepherd.net/2022/11/a-better-moderation-system-is-possible-for-the-social-web

- FSEP's approach of providing more information about whether or not to accept a follow request

- concentric federations of instances, with permission boundaries ("bubble-only posts", more visible than local-only but still scoped -- and not public)

- better control over federation, for example the firewall-like approach Emelia 👸🏻 (npub1ecs…u4wq) has suggested or the kids of ideas
db0 (npub1qum…eum2) has for better allow-list management in https://dbzer0.com/blog/can-we-improve-the-fediverse-allow-list-model/
