#EngenderedWriting 08 — 08 — Do you have a character who feels compelled to act out their gender, e.g., a macho man, a girly girl, etc. Why or why not?

Oddly, this is one place that my stories don't mirror real life. I've encountered men and women who act out their gender roles; from a distance, it's sad. I'm aware that in my teens I also acted out, but I never convinced the world. I now know that if I'm being myself I present as what's known now as a enby, with a slight bias toward one gender.

The closest character I've written would be a certain prizefighter whose body is so much like a cartoon character, everyone is convinced he takes steroids. He makes misogynist comments, fights by panicking his opponent, and hates all people who aren't his type of people. His is not toxic masculinity; he's simply toxic. Strangely, he's repeatedly manipulated by a female SC who aims him as a weapon to ambush the MC. She's a former prizefighter. Through smart fighting, she MC ends up beating the crap out of him.

Why haven't I written a character acting out their gender roles? To me, it often comes off like a caricature. IRL, I know some and watched some female influencers. They seem like they're always performing, overacting their part, pun intended. I prefer subtle depictions.
