Cultural appropriation is a sticky subject for me. I see the problem when the issue is the commodification of another people's culture that leads to reinforcement of stereotypes or outright myths. But a healthy culture is genetic in nature, spread and reinforced by its desirability. Is pop music an appropriation of African music, or an embrace? There were certainly a lot of clearly racist people as recently as the 1980s who saw blues-derived pop and rock music as a threat to white "culture."
