We finished ours last night. Like you, I had to make some adjustments to fit our space. I added adjustable leveling feet due to our uneven basement floor. And, I added some more back support so it could be free-standing (though, I'm leaning towards eventually anchoring to the wall anyway). We also decided to go with 15 gallon totes for the top row. They have the same size lid as the 27 gallon, so it was a pretty seemless to add a little variety.
This was an awesome #diy project for a couple of amateurs!
