I don't know much about mac or how the openscad is installed. If this was Linux and a flatpack/snap, I would be thinking the user id running the program isn't the same as the user id of your documents. You could chmod so everyone can read your documents or chown the files to the same user id as the running program.

But that is a shot in the dark.
