TIL that Rube Goldberg machines are known as “Heath Robinson contraptions” in the UK, named for a cartoonist who drew cartoons of unnecessarily complex machines that perform trivial tasks, just like Rube Goldberg did. It looks to me like Robinson's work predates Goldberg’s.
