Theoretically, let's say for a moment that I like SJ_zero's technology posts and hate their non-technology posts.
On facebook/twitter/etc, I would only be shown the technology posts
Here on the fediverse, I am shown posts chronologically for the most part, with posts getting put back at the top as repeats/retoots federate around.
In the latter case, the responsibility is on me to either only allow display of the technology posts, or to just ignore the non-technology posts, or to act in some other way.
People have been taught by these platforms that they don't need to do any work, that the system will take care of them. So they are no longer used to exercising agency to improve their positions and effectively yearn for the mines.
You're in control of your experience here, to the maximum extent possible. And that's a good thing.

Unfortunately, trying to force people to change often simply misses the mark. There has to be some basic level of willingness to use a system like this, without which you are depriving them of everything that makes the fediverse special/interesting
