An update to this. I decided to build the front end as an SPA but using purely native web components and the fetch API. The only tooling I'm allowing myself in the front end is for linting and bundling. I've also added Tailwind CSS because I like using it and it's quicker than writing the atomic CSS I'd like to write myself.
So far the process has been eye-opening. No it's been radicalising.
I'm quickly becoming a "no-frameworks" proponent, especially for the front end.
We don't need them!
