People on the left seem to be continuously stupefied by how the far right manages to increase it's appeal toward the working class while openly aligning with the interests of the capital.
The equation is not that complicated: in times of economic and political crisis when the aspirations of the workers have been squashed for long enough, brutally enough, it is easy to instill the nihilistic idea that economic hierarchies will never be altered because they have been rendered unalterable.
The promise the far right makes to these people is that of a narcisitic compensation : "You will remain dominated, but you will also be able to exert your domination over other designated minorities. We will create a sub-proletariat and give you legal rights to discriminate against them, to police them, to exploit them, to hurt them, to wound them, and ultimately maybe even to kill them."

If there is any comfort to find I believe that history shows us that when the cruelty and the barbarity begin to unravel in a tangible manner in front of everyone's eyes class solidarity tends to rebuild.
