watched quite a few more Shaw Brothers films over the last week or so, so here goes:
"The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" (dir. Lau Kar-leung, 1978) Gordon Liu stars as San De. the plot is pretty cliché these days (guy gets his arse kicked, goes off to the Shaolin Temple to train, returns and destroys the bad guys with the power of his kung fu) but you have to remember these films were the ones responsible for creating the cliché in the first place
Gordon Liu is immense. he looks pretty gawky and awkward, so he's great as the weedy bloke at the start, and his martial arts are superb to watch. some of the shots go on for ages and the fight choreography is so complex
it's easy to see why this film in particular is so highly regarded, I remember watching it years ago but according to the booklet the version I would've watched has 20-30 minutes cut out of the middle! so there was plenty that was new to me
