A liberal demonstration might seek to communicate "we're angry, we'll keep showing up, and if you don't listen we'll turn this into a campaign to primary you". That's power and the threat to use it. A theocratic demonstration might seek to communicate "the people who work at this hospital aren't safe from us so long as they're helping the kids we want dead. We won't forget who works here". Power and threat.

Whether it's occupying lunch counters or blocking traffic or doing a sit in or whatever, you're trying to display that you have the power to be disruptive and that you're willing to escalate.
