If you want to do JVM development without writing Java, there's Kotlin. If you want to do functional programming, there's Lisp. If everything should be an object, there's Ruby. It may be the right level of compromise among those things; I don't think there's a single problem class for which the expert will say "the best possible language for this is Scala".
