in the next few years scientists will put a firm period on when Covid transitioned to be endemic (I'd say sometime in mid 2023, but depending on how they decide to define it I could see it all the way to early 2022) but we definitely won't hit 2 million dead (in the US) until next decade unless society collapses... Which is sadly quite possible, although then Covid will be the least of our worries.
