My favorite analogy is vehicle design. Every tweak to the design has a cost/benefit tradeoff. Sometimes the benefits outweigh the costs, sometimes vice versa. But which it turns out to be depends not just on the vehicle's (or brain's) design, but on the environment and usage, as well. Take a look at drag racers. Amazing acceleration, maxed out at the expense of everything else. If you want to win a drag race, only drag racers are an option. But if you want to take your kids to school, it's probably the last thing you want. There are all kinds of uses for vehicles and brains, and, thankfully, all kinds of vehicles and brains to match those uses. When you recognize that, it becomes much easier to understand why neurodiversity proponents say variation is a normal part of being human and should be embraced to everyone's mutual benefit.
