#EngenderedWriting 13 — Shame is often associated with female gender roles. How would you write a female character devoid of shame without making it negative? If you can't, why not?

There is an unintentional nuance and vagary in this question, sorry. nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpq4cdq4kjuqke9rcedfakw46me9gm8xz8ptredg84yw2psk7kll5tqjhfzfj (nprofile…fzfj) pointed out:

No human is free of shame except sociopaths.

What I am referring to is specific shame used to enforce gender roles, and to punish deviance from them. Yes, a person can be free from shame—or a specific flavor of shame—by never having had it taught to them. Our society teaches the behavior pattern. (Relatives, peers, religion, law, etc.) If the society expects a behavior in a situation and a member doesn't perform it when necessary, they can be labeled... well, there are plenty of labels, some verging on slurs. It's often a lose-lose situation for the individual.

One way to depict a female character who lacks shame as positive, as hinted above, is to depict her society as one that does not teach shame to enforce gender roles. No major society like that exists today.

I am crafting societies for future social sf and fantasy worlds that don't teach the behavior pattern—and the society neither collapses nor is less happy than our own. Yeah, humans will always find ways to be, become, or make others unhappy. Human nature.

In one story, lack of gender shaming simply is, along with different mores, aspirations, and social roles. The reader will probably experience an uncanny valley feeling as certain expected behaviors never show up (though there's plenty of other conflicts). In another story, members of a post-singularity future society of this type meet, in a first contact situation, a surviving lunar colony whose society preserves social customs and religious remnants from our time. Misunderstandings abound and become deadly.
