I always find it weird when I see people asking "Do you have..." a social network.

"Do you have Facebook?"
"Do you have Twitter?"
"Do you have Instagram?"
And now,
"Do you have Mastodon?"

No, I don't *have* any of those things. At best, Mark Zuckerberg *has* Facebook and Instagram, Elon Musk *has* Twitter, and Eugene Rochko *has* Mastodon.

But even then I wouldn't phrase it like that. It's stupid.

I would ask, "Are you *on*" all those things. As in, "Do you have an account on...?" (To which I would reply, "I am on Facebook", "I am on Twitter", "I am not on Instagram", and "I am on Mastodon")

But then I realise that what people really mean by "Do you have Facebook?" for example, is, "Do you have the Facebook app installed on your phone?"

And that's somehow even worse because it implies that the only way you could use those things is via an app installed on your phone. And that's offensive to me because my phone has never been my first choice for doing anything, and social media is no exception.

Back when all those other networks still had open APIs and still allowed it, I would use them via a native desktop app. When they closed off their APIs to those things, I reluctantly switched to using their websites from a desktop PC.

Mastodon's API is still open, so guess what? I use it from a native desktop application (Sengi, in my case), and I love it.

So please stop asking people if they HAVE this or that social network. It's mobileist and offensive. ;-P </somewhattongueincheekrant>

What do you think the most common language people use when they want to ask if you're on a particular social networking platform? And what about other services besides social networking? Do people ask, "Do you have Netflix?" for example, or "Are you on Netflix?" 🤔
