Speaking of Nazi Germany and movies that don't hold your hand, that's kind of why I appreciated The Zone of Interest on rewatch. Admittedly it's not terribly exciting and might work better condensed down to a short film, but I like how it focuses on the life of Höss and juxtaposing his perfect house next to the concentration camp, and the sounds you hear in the distance, without needing to have some moment where a character needs to learn that what they're doing is wrong.
Film I just saw - companion - felt like it got like that. Suddenly Jack Quaid's character wasn't inept and pathetic, he was thriller movie bad guy who wants control.
Also I remember thinking JoJo Rabbit was a lot less interesting when it became about the kid and the Jewish girl he was hiding. I would've enjoyed an entire tongue in cheek movie set in Nazi Germany about a boy who's friends with an imaginary Hitler.
