The interesting thing about the fedi is that it only works as a decentralized network with small and self hosted instances.
Any larger instance and some user will make some other user on Mastosoc feel Some Type Of Way before getting their instance defederated, and then the instance winds up on tons of blocklists.
With smaller instances it's less likely to happen unless you're constantly poking bears or getting involved in flamewars with edgy memes and political facts being dropped like C4s in threads.
Yet something like Nostr also hasn't really taken off, the relay is associated with spam and other unsavory activity, and I'm not even sure if you'd be getting the same level of interaction there without having to piggyback onto activitypub with said relay.
