We talk a fair bit about the "hidden curriculum" in academia these days but there's one piece that doesn't seem to get enough attention: Dress codes. I know it's not de rigueur in certain circles to announce a dress code (e.g., for law school events) but that leaves students, especially first gen students, adrift in ways that are ultimately unkind (even if well-meant).
