Ahh! It's the other way around. ^_^
Scrobbling started with Audioscrobbler, to track music per device (similar to #WhatPulse for tracking keys you type per device) and provide statistics.
Then Last.fm came, and the two started to get closer and eventually merged.
The community aspect of Last.fm was combined with Audioscrobbler's tracking, and voila, scrobbling + social aspect as we know it for the last 20 years.
Of course, then came Libre.fm and GNU fm. The former further established the social aspect / music discovery with scrobbling; while the latter championed self-hosting (which of course doesn't have a social aspect and discovery if it's a solo instance). And of course Maloja and everything else similar to GNU fm.
