When was the last time you truly YELLED at someone? I'm talking "make someone shit their britches" type hollering.
Most people aren't used to projecting a powerful, intimidating energy with their voice. Luckily, anyone can add it to their self defense toolbox with some practice. Using your voice can:
*Startle the attacker
*Draw attention
*Make you seem not worth pursuing anymore
*Get you out of a fawn/freeze response and into a fight/flight one
All it takes is practice. When you're alone, try yelling "STOP," "NO," "BACK THE FUCK OFF!" and similar phrases. It feels silly at first, but if you aren't used to doing it, you might not be able to get the words out when you need to.
We're programmed from childhood to be docile and you have to train yourself not to defer to the strongest person in the room.
What helped me is singing along to aggressive music, specifically the part in "Killing in the Name" where Zack yells "FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!" over and over.
