If you can find another, unaffected, telegraph pole, hit them both with a claw hammer and see if there's any difference in sound.
This was taught to me by a Western Power engineer years ago, to look for damaged/rotting poles. He had a £5k machine for the job, but said hitting them with a hammer was more reliable! The ones where there's internal structural decay or damage sound different.
