wow. ok. figured out why I was having problems logging into fedex dot com. their password entry field silent truncates passwords longer than about 20 characters. It'll show the pips for each character when the password manager poops in the password but only transmits the first chunk to the backend. the "reset password" form works just fine with long passwords but then I can't actually log in with it. Shorter password works fine.
I found this out by manually pasting the password, hit the "show password" button and there was my truncated password.
