Happy running my small instance as well, but federations comes at an efficiency penalty. Today my instance is only consistently interacting with 10 primary large-ish instances. This becomes a problem when its thousands for each instance. Scalability is always cheaper centrally and there is an ever increasing penalty for distributed servers.
