On the one hand, there was a time when mental asylums were horrific places. Where people were routinely imprisoned and tortured for being mentally unwell, neurodivergent, queer, etc. No doubt, there are places in the world where this isn't yet history.
In the 1960s/70s our society needed stories like Cuckoo's Nest to expose and question this model. Like An Angel at My Table, it reminds us of this dark history, so we never allow ourselves to renormalise it.
