Following the execution of her close friend and comrade, Liam Mellows, Morrissey's mental health declined. She was refused a military pension by the Free State and was incarcerated in St Brigid's Mental Asylum in Ballinasloe in the 1930s. She died there in 1974 at the age of 84.

She was buried in the Abbey graveyard in Athenry but it wasn't until 2017 that her grave was finally marked with a headstone.
