I bet a lot of those papers could have survived in a diminished capacity if they hadn't sold, but my parents' previous newspaper was employee-owned and they still couldn't see a sustainable path forward. Now they're at a small-town outlet that's down to a half-dozen staff who make like $30k a year each.
