This is why I think relays should be an ephemeral layer on top of a permanent data store. The relays would trickle events up to the permanent DB, which could have an eventually-consistent read-only copy for detailed queries.
That's an extension to the core Nostr idea that could be very valuable for some applications, and hasn't yet been explored.
