The problem with POW is that the work required to deter the spammer also deters the regular user. I don't want my machine hung up for 60 seconds while it crunches a POW message. A POW that requires 10 seconds might be acceptable for me as a user, but still allows the spammer to send 360 messages per hour per equivalent machine.
