They have improved, but several years back OSX was writing a page file that would ultilmately fill my disk and require a reboot even though I never had memory contention. I have in my professional life seen Linux and FreeBSD servers that ran for 15 years without a reboot (some people are fucking cowboys).
Upgrading being smooth is also dependent on your needing to authenticate with Apple to download anything from the store (including free software). If you don't want to have an Apple ID you can use MacPorts which is similar to BSD, but on the new M4 I have found there are at least a few packages you can't build even with the wierd x86 emulation layer they have
