More than anything else I’d ever done up to that point, this sort of experience made me feel empowered. My family trusted me. I felt ok knowing I had everything I need to go out into the world. I called home daily to let everyone know, but other than that I had a wonderful time. These experiences set me up for success later in life when I came across more challenging or dangerous situations. I always knew how to keep myself safe.
