I have figured out how memory allocation is supposed to work in vulkan. It's not really explained in the tutorial I did, and the function looking for a correct memory type seems to be taken from the api documentation with minimal modifications. vkguide.dev doesn't explain memory allocation at all and recommends using the vulkan memory allocator library instead.
