Bias in the ER is real. It is common. It is deadly.
There are many types of bias that can harm patients, but bias along racial/ethnic lines, and bias against people with mental health or substance use disorders are particularly common in my experience.
When a patient presents to the ER, the presumption should be that they have a medical emergency. Assuming otherwise kills.
