It is possible in the US to have decent insurance. We've had UHC and it's as awful as you think. My wife has insurance through her work that is actually good. ER visit usually ends up about $200. Expensive prescriptions are usually $50 or less once the deductible kicks in.
However, you *will* pay somehow. The monthly cost for her insurance, split between us and her employer, is the same as our *mortgage payment.*
