As a white male engineer working in the construction sector I understand this all too well.
I am, however, hopeful that we are making progress toward a more equal and fairer future. As anecdotal proof I offer this:
My eldest daughter is attending the same university engineering program that I attended 30 years ago. Each year the student chapter of ASCE (Civil Engineers) poses for a group photograph. 30 years ago I, as the group vice president, posed with 11 other chapter officers. 11 men, 1 women, no people of color. Last week my daughter, as group vice president, posed for the same picture with 7 women, 5 men all from a broad diversity of races and backgrounds. For the 100 years prior to my photo it likely looked the same, perhaps less the single woman. In the 30 years since my photo opportunities where opened for so many women and those previously held back.
I am hopeful that tomorrow's girls will meet a better world thanks to the young women of today that pushed through all those barriers put in front of them and, for my part, I will happily help any woman in my industry blow up those barriers.
