I know of him from a section of a 1948 newspaper interview with Jim Curran, the farm owner's son.
In the interview, Jim describes how, as a young man, he was frequently sent on horseback to an Oakland pharmacist to obtain a regular supply of opium for James.
(Opium was easily obtained with a prescription—maybe like opioids in the 2020s?)
James would receive an ounce of opium a week, and rationed them out, but would suffer from withdrawal when he ran out by the end of the week.
