If we are honest, it is somewhat different: It is not the majority of scientists at a time who decide on the validity of a scientific result, but the rigorous scientific method. Sometimes majority opinions have to be corrected later (e.g. Newton's corpuscular theory of light).
But yes, if an overwhelming majority of scientists competent in a field agree, the probability of a valid result is very high; in most cases higher than the %-majority**.
