Quake. QuakeWorld for those of you who wanted to experience it with TCP/IP and were there for the (r)evolution. Multiplayer was unlike anything out there (it is the godfather of modern FPS afterall). Also first game to have had +mlook (ability to use mouse to look around!) and have a console. Also the creators of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Adrian Carmack and John Romero are fucking gods imo.
Skill ceiling is so high that I personally spent about 10-15 years playing it, and IT, only. Also taught me how to LAN computers together and learn networking and protocols which are still invaluable to me today. Here's a 2023 video of over 8 hours of coverage of the latest Quake from iD Software hahhaha.

Also Team Fortress, the mod for Quake. That was the first mod ever made for a FPS, was made by a friend, who went on to make the best FPS' on the planet after being hired by Valve in the mid 90's 🤯. I can't help but hold unlimited positive bias towards iD software and Valve. They push the boundaries every time.
