I knew about the books but didn't prioritize read them first. I think they did a very very good job adapting the books for TV though.

I grew up on the original series and watched all of the next generation. Kind of got bogged down in DS9 and when Discovery came out I just reached saturation. Never went back to the franchise, haven't even seen the Abrams movies.
