The issue doesn't appear in a terminal, just any GUI window. It doesn't happen for the inbuilt keyboard or another external USB keyboard.
In case it's relevant, I am also seeing a few extra parens showing up (short pressed on shift either side) which might mean "hardware issue" or just coincidence.
