With people losing trust in the official WordPress repo, if you can’t switch away from WordPress since it will break too many things or the alternatives don’t have everything that you need, I suggest the following as a stop gap.

1. Install the AspirePress plugin, to switch the plugin and theme repo to use AspirePress, an alternative repo.

2. If you are sick of Matt Mullenweg’s Anti WP Engine rantings and peddling his services, you can also remove the WordPress events and news widget with this Plugin
