They never created a pathway upwards, though, for understandable reasons. They should have had a way to have competence rise to the level of its capability, promoting guys who handle small units to oversee big ones and eventually take the leadership burden off their shoulders to allow them to go back to the media side.

But it's real hard to trust anyone, particularly in their position. Add in the fact that competence was chased away at every turn and you get what happened: Nobody to promote to take the load off their shoulders.
