Have you thought of killing the grass in preparation for next year? i.e. Cardboarding the area and letting it sit until you're ready to plant next year. I'm toasting my mostly weedy backyard this fall. I bought a rear-tine tiller this year, so when the cold weather is on its way I'm going to till the hell out of the entire back yard so that it will get snowed on and sit until spring at which time I will lay down cardboard with some small separations (to let the rain seep in) and switch to clear plastic (small backyard) to roast everything underneath once the sunny weather comes. Then I'll till in my worm compost with some leaves saved from this year to introduce bacteria. Finally I'll sow the microclover seeds I purchased this year and hopefully have a weed-free backyard clover lawn.
