The scam donation pages are disgusting. Aside from those I've spent quite a bit of time talking to who I didn't meet through such requests (which is a small handful), I've resolved to only direct funds to UNRWA and other well known, reputable organizations.
Pulling at heartstrings is something scammers are particularly good at. Better to aid an organization with systems in place for vetting the veracity of recipients of aid, and who can benefit from scaling as well, than to risk sending money to these swine.
Scaling isn't to be discounted either -- 100 individuals spending $10 on food isn't going to go as far as an organization spending $1000 on food. Keep your head on straight, even if your heart is rightfully freaking the fuck out.
