NFTs are an inefficient use of block space on BTC protocol. If NFTs became very popular in the future it could make transacting in BTC too expensive and no one would want to use it. Hopefully Taproot enables better use cases than NFTs. The debate is whether BTC protocol should be a free market with NFTs or if it should only be used as monetary network. If latter, there could be a future soft fork.
