You may have just had bad luck with a problem wireless card, as others said earlier Intel cards usually work consistently well. My personal experience with those older Atheros chips has been spotty as well. If you're just starting out with Linux, then I recommend trying it out on a secondary machine if one is available as it certainly takes time to get used to the quirks and differences while you feel out how things generally work - otherwise it can quickly become frustrating.
