I used to like to travel without planning anything. I still do, but the people I travel with like to know what's going to happen.
Border patrol in Europe get suspicious of people who don't have a place to stay. They're like where are you staying? I'm like, I don't know, I just got here. Let's see what happens.
They don't like that, but it almost always works out. A couple of times I've had to stay in places that I probably wouldn't have stayed. One night, I stayed at a hostel in Clichy (Paris suburbs). I actually thought it was fine, but the woman I was traveling with didn't love it. The price was right. The problem was that there was this huge conference or something happening in Paris. The next day we got this great little apartment walking distance to the Louvre.
That was back when I had some money in the bank. Actually, it was on that trip that the Great Recession happened. Thousands of dollars were erased in one day. It was 2008, that was the last time I felt like I was financially OK. Ever since, I've struggled to keep up.
But I get I did get a couple of years where things were OK. I shouldn't complain. Some people are always broke and never get to go to Paris and stay at a crappy hostel in Clichy. I'm fortunate, but it's shitty that everything just keeps getting worse and no one seems to give a fuck.
