I think I reasoned that I shouldn't be tolerant and accepting.

Americans are taught in our schools that the US started with the pilgrims who left England and sailed for the New World, seeking a land of religious freedom.

As later teachers informed ,e these pilgrims that are celebrated as the founders (who were generations removed from the actual nation building and were landing in someone else's nation anyways) were not so much 'leaving to find religious freedom' as they were overly strict, nutcase Christians who wanted everyone to be pure and chaste and live like the people who put on the Salem Witch Trials. The English has strongly suggested that 'if you want to go be nutcases, why don't you go get on a boat and go start your own thing. Waaaaaaaay over there.'

Reading the news today, I see too many religious nutcases trying to make everyone else live by their rules, outlawing things that don't hurt them, don't even effect them, but make them uncomfortable.

I think the problem may have been by celebrating the pilgrims rather than viewing it as a cult that got lucky to be saved by some kindly, tolerant and accepting natives. Four centuries later that Pilgrim Spirit wants to make it illegal for your kid to cut/not cut their hear because it looks like it might be the wrong standard for the gender.

I guess the lesson is tolerate and accept, but if someone has made their own bed, let them them die in it.
