Easily get started with a Heltec V3 device, ESP32 board. Can buy on Amazon for ~$25. Super easy to flash and get connected. The Heltec V3 is a great starting device. NEVER POWER ON WITHOUT ATTACHING ANTENNA, you'll damage the board.
Buy two so you can test messages between them.
Best is a RAK wireless module(s) or LilyGo t-beam; these cost more but they are very efficient on power.
